Are Video Games Really To Blame For Bad Child Behavior?

It would be unfair to paint all video games with the same brush.  There are some very good video games out there that are very educational and can help your child develop higher brain function and motor skills.  However, "violent" video games can have a negative influence on your child's behavior.  Remember, that people become what they constantly think, feel, say, and do.  In moderation, the games can be ok but the excessive playing of these violent games can have a lasting effect on what your child thinks, feels, says, and does in the future.

Parents many times do not even realize that their children are spending too much time in front of the television or computer screen. Sometimes it is a matter of busy lives and parents who inadvertently use the television or computer as a babysitter. Before parents realize it, their children are more interested in the latest cartoon episode or computer game characters than they are in spending time in physical or academic activities, pursuing personal interests and hobbies, or even just hanging out with friends and family members.

Electronic gadgets, television, computers, and video games are now a part of mainstream society and it would be painful to try to stop your children from using them. We can, however, teach our children to set limits so that the excessive use of electronics and playing of video games does not become an ongoing problem. Parents can set up guidelines and rules about when the games can be played and for how long.

Letting the children come up with ideas will help give them ownership and the opportunity to explore other areas of interest. Parents and kids can also make a new routine of a family game night where no electronics are involved. Sometimes it might be necessary for the family to schedule time away from home, such as an evening walk or afternoon at the park, in order to make sure that the television isn't used even as background noise.

Remember that there will never be a day where your skills as a parent are not put to the test.
